By the skin of one’s teeth
To barely succeed, win by a very thin margin
“Our soccer team won the semi-final match by the skin of their teeth.”
Get under one’s skin
To annoy or irritate one
“Don’t let Kato-san get under your skin. It is his job to look for errors in our work.”
Jump out of one’s skin
To be suddenly shocked or surprised
“Sadato-san was concentrating so hard on her work that she nearly jumped out of her skin when the fire alarm sounded.”
Save one’s own skin
To save one’s self from trouble, usually without regard for the safety of others
“Tanita-san was too concerned with saving his own skin to help the others that were caught in the snow avalanche.”
Thin-skinned
To have one’s feeling easily hurt by criticism
“You can’t be thin-skinned if you work for Kondo-san. He can be quite critical.” Note: the opposite is “thick-skinned”
