「Japanese Leadership 日本の発信力を問う【英語】」
(ダーシー・アンダーソン) |
Our panel’s topic was Japanese leadership. We were
fortunate to have three distinguished panelists that are all global leaders in
their respective fields. Allen Miner, founder and CEO of SunBridge Corporation,
Nahoko Shindo, MD, PhD, Medical Officer of the Global Influenza Program, World
Health Organization and Yoshito Hori, Dean of Globis Management School and Managing
Partner of Globis Capital Partners. The panel was facilitated by Darcie Anderson,
Vice-President of Unicul International. |

Ms. Anderson opened the discussion by reviewing the status of Japanese leadership
at the global level, including both political and business leadership. It was
established that although Japan does lead the world in some industries, Japan
is not influencing international policy or making the impact that they should
be making, given their economic might. Shindo-san explained how Japan provides
one-third of the funding to UN programs, yet there are few Japanese at the director
level where decisions are made on how to fund programs. She talked about the
reluctance of the Japanese government to assume leadership at the international
level because they don’t want to be being seen as dictators, a mindset left over
from World War II.

Hori-san explained that English skills are absolutely necessary at the international
level and encouraged everyone to take every opportunity they could find to practice
speaking and presenting in English. He is quite optimistic about Japan’s future
because of the young entrepreneurs and young company presidents he works with
that are not afraid of taking on leadership opportunities. |

Mr. Miner presented the seven signs of an effective leader, as determined by
a University of Nebraska leadership training program that he attended. He encouraged
the audience members to find opportunities outside their companies to network,
especially in the non-profit sector. Charities are an excellent place to contribute
to society, make important connections, and develop leadership skills as all
such organizations need volunteers to carry out their work. |
